If you’ve ever spent time listening to radio, you’ll know how much a host shapes what you hear. The voice that introduces artists, shares context, and guides you through something you might not have chosen on your own. In jazz, that role carries a particular weight, and for decades, LeRoy Downs has built his career around it.

His work sits across radio, interviews, and live music programming, all centered on one thing: helping people connect more deeply with the music, the artists, and ultimately themselves. That position hasn’t come from a distance. It’s grown out of years spent in conversation with artists, composers, musicians, and within the rhythm of the genre itself.

“I have three decades of great relationships, from the elders all the way to folks coming out of high school and college,” he said.

Those relationships shape what LeRoy brings into his work. They inform who he interviews, what he plays, and how he introduces people to the music.

Changing How People Experience Jazz

A big part of that work comes down to how people discover jazz in the first place. LeRoy doesn’t see audiences as disengaged, but he does recognize that most people rely on nostalgia. For him, that creates a responsibility. If the same artists and recordings are presented over and over, that’s what people come to associate with the genre, and it narrows the picture.

“Jazz is a living and breathing music. In order for that to flourish, we have to continue to intrigue and spark curiosity with new music.”

LeRoy’s approach is all about widening that picture. On radio, that means introducing contemporary artists alongside more familiar names, giving listeners a way into music they might not have actively searched for. In live settings, it’s meant to create environments where people can experience that work more directly, and hear it unfold in real time.

“Most people think jazz is background music. It’s actually an opportunity to actively listen, learn, and enjoy,” he explained.

That shifting perspective comes from enjoying the music and allowing it to take you to new dimensions inside yourself. It comes from giving people a different kind of musical experience: one that allows their minds and bodies to discover new journeys and pathways to joy.

The same thinking carries into LeRoy’s work with younger musicians. Through jam sessions and introductions across the community, he and his team help create opportunities for artists to meet, collaborate, and build something of their own. Fred Smith is the co-founder of Just Jazz and is on the ground seeking sponsors and patrons for all of our endeavors, Rebecca Hogan is hands on with the students creating intricate opportunities for them and helping them navigate the business terrain and Jim Brock is always on the scene, camera in hand, documenting these intimate life changing moments in the music.

“They build relationships, and the next thing you know, they’re forming bands, they’re playing together, and eventually they’re out there touring the world together.”

Bringing it Together on JustJazz.TV

JustJazz.TV grew out of that way of working. It brings together the different parts of what LeRoy has been building over the years and gives them a shared home.

“Think of Just Jazz as many things. The website is a place for us to put all of what we’re doing,” he said.

The platform brings together interviews, performance footage, and radio archives, making it easier to spend time with the artists and the music in one place. Someone new to jazz can explore at their own pace, while those already engaged can go deeper into the work and the people behind it.

The choice of a .TV domain reflects how LeRoy thinks about that experience.

“You can’t just use your audible sensibilities, you have to have the audio and the visual. That’s why we went with .TV. Actually seeing the music makes a difference. Watching how musicians respond to each other, how a performance develops, how something takes shape in the moment, all of that adds another layer to what you’re hearing.”

LeRoy understands his place in the music clearly. Although he isn’t a musician himself, he’s built a role that supports both the artists and the work they’re doing. Through radio, interviews, and music programming, he creates space for musicians to be heard, recognised, and discovered, especially those who might otherwise have been overlooked.

“Who’s going to tell the world about that? Who’s going to play their music, interview them, and put them in the spotlight? That’s my job,” he laughed.

JustJazz.TV continues evolving with the music, and with what we know jazz to be.

“There hasn’t been much money made in three decades, but there is lots of love and I’ll never be done. I have an entire genre of music, an entire community, depending on it!”
